WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF TAKING HIGH AMOUNT OF OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS?
Taking omega-3 in high amounts is not
necessarily better. Omega-3 is generally well tolerated, but very high
supplemental doses can produce side effects and, in certain people, increase
risks.
What can
happen with high amounts?
1. 🩸 Increased
bleeding tendency
High doses can affect platelet function and may increase bleeding risk,
particularly when combined with anticoagulants such as warfarin or other
blood-thinning medicines. (ODs)
2. ❤️ Possible
increase in atrial fibrillation
Some large studies have found that higher-dose omega-3 supplementation may
increase the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) in some people,
particularly those with cardiovascular risk factors. This is one reason
high-dose supplementation should be medically supervised.
3. 🤢 Digestive
side effects
Higher amounts can cause:
- Fishy aftertaste or burping
- Heartburn
- Nausea
- Stomach discomfort
- Diarrhea
- Bad breath
- Headache (ODs)
4. 🧬 Possible
effects on immune function
Very high doses may affect immune function, although this is less well
established than the gastrointestinal effects and bleeding concerns. (ODs)
How much is
"high"?
For EPA + DHA, the NIH notes that the
FDA recommends no more than 3 g/day of EPA + DHA combined, including up
to 2 g/day from supplements, unless higher doses are being used under
healthcare supervision. (ODs)
Importantly, some prescription omega-3
preparations are intentionally used at much higher doses—for example, to treat
very high triglycerides. These are medical treatments, rather than doses
that everyone should take routinely.
One
important point about supplements
Don't confuse "1,000 mg fish oil"
with "1,000 mg omega-3."
For example, a capsule might contain:
1,000 mg fish oil → only 300 mg EPA + DHA
So when determining your intake, look at the EPA
and DHA amounts on the Supplement Facts label, not just the total fish-oil
weight.
Bottom line: A moderate
amount of omega-3 can be beneficial, but taking more does not automatically
provide more health benefits. Very high doses should generally be used for a
specific medical reason and with professional guidance, especially if you
take blood-thinning medication or have a heart-rhythm problem.
