WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MARINE AND PLANT OMEGA-3?

The main difference between marine omega-3 and plant omega-3 is the type of omega-3 they provide and how efficiently the body can use it.

ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) is found in foods such as:

  • Flaxseeds
  • Chia seeds
  • Walnuts
  • Soybeans
  • Canola oil

ALA is an essential fatty acid, meaning your body cannot make it and must obtain it from food.

However, the body has to convert ALA into EPA and DHA, and this conversion is relatively inefficient.

2. 🐟 Marine omega-3 = mainly EPA and DHA

Fish and seafood obtain their omega-3s ultimately from marine organisms, particularly algae.

Fatty fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel provide EPA and DHA directly.

These forms can be incorporated into the body's tissues without first needing to convert ALA.

3. Why does this matter?

Think of it this way:

Plant omega-3:

Marine omega-3:
🐟 EPA + DHA → directly available

This is why, when looking at an omega-3 supplement, you shouldn't focus only on the total amount of oil. Look at the actual EPA and DHA content.

One important exception: algae

There is a plant-friendly source that provides DHA and sometimes EPA directly: algae oil.

Algae are actually the original source of much of the EPA and DHA that accumulate in the marine food chain. Therefore, algae-based omega-3 can provide the benefits of direct DHA/EPA while being suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

In simple terms

🌱 Plant omega-3 (ALA): essential, but the body must convert it.

🐟 Marine omega-3 (EPA + DHA): already in the forms the body uses extensively.

🌿 Algae omega-3 (DHA/EPA): a vegan way to obtain direct marine-type omega-3.

If your goal is specifically heart health, brain health, eye health or reducing triglycerides, EPA and DHA are generally the forms to pay particular attention to.
