WHAT IS A HEALTHY GUT

A healthy gut refers to a balanced and well-functioning digestive system, where the trillions of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microbes) in the gastrointestinal tract coexist in harmony. This ecosystem, called the gut microbiome, plays a critical role in digesting food, absorbing nutrients, and supporting immune function, mood, and mental health. Key indicators of a healthy gut include regular, pain-free bowel movements, minimal gas or bloating, strong immune function, and balanced mental health.

Here are some characteristics of a healthy gut:

1.  Diverse Microbiome: A wide variety of gut bacteria is associated with better resilience to stress, improved digestion, and lower risk of disease.

2.   Good Digestive Efficiency: Minimal bloating, gas, and pain after eating are signs the gut is effectively digesting and absorbing nutrients.

3.   Balanced Immune Response: A healthy gut helps regulate inflammation and prevent overreaction to harmful bacteria or allergens.

4.   Stable Mood and Energy Levels: The gut produces neurotransmitters like serotonin, so a healthy gut can support mental well-being and energy stability.

Maintaining a healthy gut often involves a balanced diet rich in fibre, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and probiotics, along with managing stress, staying hydrated, and getting regular exercise.
